Car restoration using FARO 3D solutions

Recently, kindig-It Design, a premium car restoration company in America, integrated FARO Quantum Max FaroArm, a portable coordinate measuring machine, into its workflow, wanting to speed up the existing work and expand the capabilities of its company.

According to Greg Hebard, a specialist in digital manufacturing at Kindig-it , Quantum Max FaroArm, the world’s leading portable coordinate measuring machine (CMM), is the most important instrument they have purchased. Quantum Max is an advanced portable measuring machine with three quick-changeable laser scanning probes (LLP), which are specially designed to conveniently scan objects of various sizes. Such a combination is perfect for the car design industry.

Hebard says of FARO: “Our frequently used Quantum Max, is like a reference tool for our development. The body and parts of classic vehicles have many complex shapes. So it’s fantastic to be able to design a part and be sure that it will fit into the existing body without relying on guesswork or paper templates.”

In a recent example, Greg and his colleagues used Quantum Max to scan the center console, which was fully 3D printed, as well as the car’s dashboard. The production of parts of this type involves the formation of the actual automotive part layer by layer from CAD or digital 3D model. Historically, foam or fiberglass could be used to make these components. However, now these parts can be made, even if the car is not available. To create a 3D model, other car parts can be scanned and used as a template. After that, the 3D model is used for 3D printing, taking as a basis a digital project.
