3D scanning of auto parts
It may sound like science fiction, but 3D scanning can be great for building your project car, changing parts, or making improvements.
Many believe that building a car is a laborious process of manufacturing parts and seemingly endless rounds of installation using the method of trial and error. However, the reality is that computers have changed the way we look at the creation and installation of parts using modern technologies such as 3D scanning, which are able to radically improve the speed and accuracy of this process.
The basics of 3D scanning include equipment that is moved past an object and “maps” its shape in order to create a digital 3D model of that object in the scanner software. This model can then be modified for use in computer-aided design (CAD) programs such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360. This saves a huge amount of time and significantly improves accuracy when it comes to designing parts, since the engineer no longer has to draw a model to order in CAD software from scratch. A digital 3D model of an object can be created in just a few hours.
The 3D scanning process can be used to create models with full car bodies or frames, engines, and even tiny gears used on a wristwatch. And this technology is only rapidly developing and improving.
