123 years of digitizing classic Renault cars in 3D with Artec Leo & Ray
Muséo 3D, the famous specialist in the digitization of French historical objects and art, had to carry out a realistic digitization of Renault classic cars in 3D. The project had tight deadlines and required particularly precise results. The solution was to use Artec Leo, Artec Ray, Artec Studio and photogrammetry. Muséo’s 3D team, along with Artec partner 3D Num, used the combined workflow of both scanners to scan each car in less than 4 hours. The resulting scans were transformed into realistic 3D models for the Renault Originals online virtual museum.
As soon as the project was launched, a highly qualified group of specialists scanned 45 antique Renault cars from bumper to bumper over the next three weeks. A careful selection of 3D scanners, including the Artec Ray mounted on the tripod and the handheld 3D scanner Artec Leo, made it possible to perform exceptionally fast and thorough digitization without sacrificing accuracy or realistic color rendering.
Other handheld 3D scanners lacked the AI (artificial intelligence) powered HD mode offered by Leo. The AI-powered HD mode of the Leo scanner improves performance and more than doubles the scanning resolution from 0.5 mm to 0.2 mm. This allows you to capture much finer details. In addition, HD processing reduces the surface noise of the model to a minimum. Leo HD mode scanning looks cleaner, sharper, and incredibly realistic.
When the entire scan was complete, more than 150 gigabytes of scanning data (per car) were processed by Artec Studio software, which is a complete solution for intuitive conversion of 3D scanning into submillimeter precision 3D models ready for use in CGI, reverse engineering, and other purposes.
